Get another large dog. I have three, partly because I love dogs but partly for safety. I don't know why but men fear dogs. The large the dog is, the sweeter their disposition.

Then take at least two when you go for a walk. Also, I'd take a good strong walking stick as tall as you. And a camera or post a video of him in real time. Is this communal land you were on?

As I mentioned in my post, I had a good strong walking stick with me. Not all dogs can be let to run free in the countryside without leads.

Are you allowed to possess a taser or pepper spray? I don't like depending on local police. I prefer relying on animals. I would say training dogs who need to be on leads is a kind of warning. I have Pyrs and they love to run and explore which is cool with me but my neighbors are more afraid of them than of little ankle-biters. I've had good success with key finders attached to collars. Best if they DON'T hang down into water. But when you push the button to identify where the key finder is, the dogs freak out and run home. They jump in the air and turn tail and come find their human. That has the added benefit of a stranger realizing they are being watched by a dog.

Not that I recommend Amazon... https://www.amazon.com/s?k=pet+finder&crid=3PWH334DMXBMW&sprefix=k+finder%2Caps%2C2746&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

You can use them to train your dog to find you when they hear the beeping. I haven't used mine in a long time but maybe I should as my dog is running off down a dead end road opposite my house. When he hears me driving up behind him, he comes back to jump in the car.

You could use trail cameras and no trespassing signs. I don't know what your land rights are or how that works there. I used to have a neighbor's grandson (mentally ill, I think) hanging out under my windows from midnight until 3 a.m. mooching off my wifi. That was super creepy.

Congratulations to the writers of the stories that made it to the short list and especially the three front runners.ine didn't make it so I have to think about where to submit it next. I enjoyed writing it so thank you Rayne for organising the competition.
